Chase made an important update to its referral program that now allows Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve cardholders to refer friends and family to either card. This change brings the Sapphire cards in line with how referrals work for the Freedom and Ink cards.
The Previous Limitation
In the past, if you had the Sapphire Preferred, you could only generate a referral link for that specific card. The same thing for Reserve cardholders – they could only refer to the Reserve.
This was frustrating for customers because it didn’t align with how Chase handled referrals for its other cards. For example, if you had an Ink Preferred, you could refer friends to any Ink card and earn the bonus.
The Sapphire policy created unnecessary limitations since the Sapphire Preferred and Reserve are so closely related. Oftentimes, you’d want to refer someone to the other Sapphire card you didn’t own.

Referring Between Sapphire Cards
Now, As a Sapphire Reserve cardholder, I can generate a referral link that gives my friends the option to apply for either the Reserve or Preferred card.
And it works the other way too. Preferred customers can send links for both Sapphire products. This provides more flexibility and the potential to earn referral bonuses.
My Thoughts as a Cardholder
I’m thrilled by this update as it just makes logical sense. The Sapphire lineup should have the same open referral policy as the Freedom and Ink families. I’ve missed out on potential bonuses in the past when friends opted for the Preferred instead of my Reserve referral.
Moving forward, I can share my link more freely knowing they can choose either Sapphire. That gives me a better chance to hit my 75,000-point referral cap each year. Overall, this change gives customers more value from the referral program.
